    "body": "A record you keep yourself can be edited; one kept by somebody else cannot be edited by you. Readers increasingly ask for picks registered with an independent party before the event, and in the United Kingdom the advertising rules treat a tipster's claims of past wins as needing that kind of evidence. An independent record lets you point to a number nobody has to take on trust."

    "body": "The strongest proof is a pick submitted to an independent service before kick-off: the service stamps the time when it receives it. Next come our own copy of your post taken before kick-off, and a copy saved by an independent web archive before kick-off. A date written on a page by its author is the weakest, because pages are often updated after the event."

    "heading": "How a record is admitted",

    "body": "A record is admitted once we can tie its channels to one person or publisher: the verification code from the [Join](/join/) page has to appear on each channel, and we check it there. From that moment every pick published on a verified channel counts, whether or not it is also submitted to us, and losing picks stay in the record.\n\nA new record then goes through probation: it is measured from the first pick, and it enters comparisons, rankings, titles and search engines once it reaches the Tracked level. Picks that arrive at the same time on several channels are counted once, and contradictory picks on the same match are kept and marked.\n\nThe thresholds, the limits on direct submissions and the rules for leaving are listed on the [Join](/join/) page."
